Hair Loss
Alopecia (hair loss) is the medical description of loss of hair from the head or body, sometimes to the extent of baldness. Baldness is the state of lacking hair where it often grows, especially on the head. The amount and patterns of hair loss can vary greatly, ranging from a minimal loss of hair on the head, to a total loss of all head hair, to the most extreme form of baldness which involves the loss of all hair from the head and the body.
Common Forms
The most common form of baldness in men is a genetic progressive hair thinning condition called androgenic alopecia or "male pattern baldness". Hair is lost in a well-defined pattern, beginning at both temples. Over time, the hairline recedes to form a characteristic "M" shape. Hair also thins at the crown of the head. Often a rim of hair around the sides and rear of the head remains in tact and healthy. Male pattern baldness affects roughly 40 million men in the United States alone. The pattern of hair loss in women differs from male pattern baldness. In women, the hair becomes thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede. Androgenic alopecia in women rarely leads to total baldness.
Causes
The trigger for this type of baldness is DHT, a powerful sex hormone, body, and facial hair growth promoter that can adversely affect the prostate as well as the hair located on the head. The mechanism by which DHT accomplishes this is not yet understood. In genetically prone scalps, DHT initiates a process where the width of the hair shaft is progressively decreased until scalp hair resembles peach fuzz or else becomes non-existent.
Hair loss can be contributed to many other factors besides this hormonal change some of which include medication changes, chemotherapy, radiation, nutritional factors, thyroid problems, childbirth, skin disease, hair pulling, and stress.
Hair loss can be permanent or temporary depending on the cause. An examination by a professional in hair loss is a must in order to determine the exact cause.
Effects
Alopecia can lead to low self-esteem or even anxiety and depression. Because of it's progressive nature, many patients lives are affected adversely over time. Most balding people suffer privately the sarcastic ridicule that is common in our time. The pressures of society's need to stay young and look healthy are a constant battle for the balding man or women. We all would like to keep a full head of hair forever.
